Heywood is located in Lancashire at the edge where the South Lancashire towns meet, and the townscape changes to moorland. In 2001, the population was 28,024. The town lies on the south side of the River Roch, 2 1/2 miles from Bury, 3 1/2 miles west of Rochdale, and 7 1/2 miles north of Manchester. Middleton lies to the south.
